Curtains are the most commonly used form of window treatment in homes. It is an integral part of your home interior style because it can help set the mood, depending on the fabric type and the way it drapes. Other factors such as the style and the color can also have an impact on your overall home interior style. But one of the often overlooked aspects of using curtain is how to choose the right curtain size. By getting the sizing right, you are able to achieve the maximum visual impact in your room.
It is easy to overlook this task but measuring the curtain size is not nearly as simple as it appears. Follow this step-by-step guide so you know how to measure your curtains correctly.
What You Need
To measure your curtain size right, you need a few essential items to do that. You will need a measuring tape and a calculator. This will enable you to make the correct computations when it comes to the length and width of the curtain fabric.
It is important that you have an idea of the basic measurements for your window. This will enable you to add or subtract the measurements accordingly. Once you have the measurements that are suited to your specification, it should be easy to place your order for curtain fabric online and you can be confident that it will complement your windows nicely.
Curtain Pole or Curtain Track
To get the sizing right on your curtain, there is one important factor you need to know: what is the measurement of the curtain pole or track? The pole you are using must extend 15 to 30 cm past both sides of your window. It should also be placed at least 12 to 15 cm above the top of the window frame. This will help to minimize the amount of light that enters into the room once you place the curtains into the rod and when you pull the curtains together. If you place it too low, then the light can still penetrate through the top of the curtains. At the same time, it has to be wide enough so that the curtains will gather to either side of the window when you keep it open.
To get the measurement right, you need to measure the width on the inside of the window recess. The next step is to determine how far you want the curtains to over-hang onto the side of the wall. The average measurement is 20 cm or about 8 inches. This will allow you to open the curtains wider when you want daylight to illuminate the room.
Rod Length
Another important factor when measuring your curtain size is the rod length. Curtain roads must extend 3 to 6 inches to the sides of your window frame. It is also important to know where you want to install the rod as the size of curtain will change according to whether you choose to put it inside or above the trim mount of your window.
The ideal placement for a curtain is above the trim mount. This means you need to position the rod 6 to 12 inches above the window frame. It depends on how much space there is between the top of the window frame and your ceiling. Ideally, you need to position the rod higher than the window frame and as close to the ceiling as possible to create a more elongated appearance. Make sure you consider the length of the fabric you use on your curtains.
